Ultimate Frisbee Tournement Shwaigern: German Outdoor Championships - 3rd Division

23.-25. July, 2004

Report

After the disapointing Qualification Tournament in Cologne, Drehst'n Deckel was not qualified to play in the German Championships. Some of us jumped on to other teams and were ready to play with them at the Championships. I was going to play with the DJ's from Berlin. One day day before our departure for the tournament, we recieved an Email that the team from Kiel, who plays in the second division couldn't sport a team, due to injuries. Bernie from the DJ's let us know, that we would move up to the 2nd division, because we were the highest seed in the 3rd division. That was pleasant news, but there was a much bigger consequence from this news..... DREHST'N DECKEL MOVES UP TO THE 3rd DIVISION AND IS THEREFORE ELLIGABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE GERMAN OUTDOOR CHAMIONSHIPS FOR THE FIRST TIME!!!!!! We were the highest placed team at the Qualification tournament that didn't recieve an invitation to the Championships, therefore after Kiel dropped out, we had less than 24 hours to get a playable team together. We called and emailed and begged! In the end we had about 10 Players ready to face the challenge of outdoor DFV Frisbee for the first time!

Also participating in the Championships were the Saxy Divas (1st Woman's Division) with Jenny and the Saxy Divers (2nd Open Division) from Leipzig. Jenny and I grabbed a ride with Chris from Leipzig and his really cool VW microbus. We arrived after a long drive and I met the rest of the Drehst'ners in Schwaigern, which is near Heilbronn. We were just happy to be there!

On Friday we had 2 Big mathches. Or first match was against the B-Team from the reigning German Champions, Mainz, the Rhein Flyers. It was a game that we wanted to win, in order to start out on the right foot. The Mainzers didn't make it easy but we were leading at half-time 8:7. It was a rough game and very intence, but after a long time, it was tied up at 15:15, the next point would win. We had just scored to tie it up, so we threw to them and sprinted down the field to create a monster pressure in the defence. They brought it down the field anyway and then through a high pass to a double teamed player in the zone who caught the disc. We lost, or first dissapointment in a game we thought we really could have won.

We went with our first defeat on our backs back to center court to watch Kati (who was also playing for Leipzig) and Jenny with the Divas play. It started to get really hot and sunny. Our next game was against The B-Team from Cologne (their A-Team ended up becoming the German Champions this year in a convincing victory against Mainz). We wanted to beat them very badly, because we lost to them in an extremely close game at the Qualification tournament. This time we didn't have all of our best players, but we still wanted this victory very badly. Apparently they wasnted it too, because they jumped out to a 0:2 lead and kept a 2 point difference untill 2:4. It was quite hot and they were clearly better. We only scored one more point and they won convincingly 5:15. We could only hope that the next day would go better for us, and that the grill would provide us with the necissary nourishment!

After a short shopping tour (including a stop at Aldi, where I bought a tye-dyed speedo-type swim suit for only 2 Euros!) we headed back to Schwaigern and went directly to the pool (with water slide) for some refreshing warter fun. Was that ever relaxing! After such a hot day of running around like a chicken with it's head chopped off, nothing is better than a water slide! Well, actually a mini keg and some grilled sheep's cheese comes close! We grilled and drank and went to bed in the enormous tent city. At this point I woild like to thank the orginizers for 3 wonderful breakfasts. I have never seen enough home made jams for 600 hungry frisbee players over 3 days! Thanks!

On Satuday, we were pitted against the Team der Liebe (which meens the Team of Love and they have the best team shirts I have ever seen: red with a thick plush heart on the chest). We were finally having fun during play and we were able to play our own game. It surely helped that we had a spontanious Fan Club from Berlin, who loved to see our high passes. We won 15:8 and ensured with this victory, that we wouldn't finish last placed in the 3rd division.

We waited in Massenbach this time for our next game against my old team the Hallunken. They had really put together a great team, including Juan from Columbia, even though Stefan from Halle had his yearly Championship injury. We tried and tried, but we couldn't get anything done against them. They were really good and beat us 7:15. It was alot of fun and we love playing against each other and we love cheering for eachother. Maybee next time it will end up the other way.

We found out hat our next game, which was to be our cross over game, was also in Massenbach, against the Isostars from Augsburg. We took some nourishment (Fleischkäse and Pfifferlinge!) and a few Radlers and stormed the playing field once again. Nothing went our way. I don't remember the specifics, but we lost 9:17. Our next game would be on Sunday against the Plattfisch from Hamburg for the 7th place.

We went to the gas station and grabbed a couple six packs before heading of to the organized pasta dinner in Schwaigern. We ate with the Divas and played some flubber-guts to enlighten the mood. Then we took of for the beach party at the pool. After a quick dip, things heated up with some dancing, in which even I partook in! Thats right, McPilz actually danced untill 3 a.m. instead of just falling asleep at midnight. Well, I guess I certainly had an appropriate helper for that, and a fun Drehst'ner Dancing group to make it fun!

Sadly enough, a long night of dancing at a constant intake of cheap beer leads to a hangover. I was in no condition to play our last game against Hamburg on Sunday morning, but I did it all for the golden Pineaple! We arrived early in Massenbach and no one was on the field except for two automatically rotating sprinkler systems. I knew what I had to do: I took my shirt and shoea off (it was already very hot!) and did my warm up jogging in a circle around a sprinkler system, making sure, that I was always in the line of fire! After that I was ready to play! We jumped off to a deficit of 4:7, which didn't look good, and I think I wasn't the only one with a hangover. To our credit, we scored 3 points in arrow to narrow it to 7:8 at half time. I took a half-time nap, and then things started going our way. We were the better team in the second half, and endded up winning this very close game 18:16 with a comeback! We were the 7th placed team from 10 in the 3rd Division (which really meens, that we are the 27th placed team in Germany). DRESHST'N DECKEL!
