Ultimate Frisbee Tournement in Munich: Qualification Regional League South

21./22. Febuary, 2004

Report

Drehst'n Deckel finally decided to take the next step in their developement as a frisbee team. This year we are participating for the first time in the DFV (German Frisbee-Sport Association) tournament season. For first year teams like us, it is neccisary to play in the Qualification tournament for their Regional League. The best 2 teams at this tournament move on to the C-Religation

After a pleasant arrival in Uwe's VW-Golf, we sat down for a few Augistiners and talked a bit with the youth team from the hosting sport club /d'Wadlbeiser). We finished this first evening withot injuries, although Frank got a disc wacked in his face from Carsten. Sleep.

So we awoke and took part in an ok breakfast. After that we played against Muggeseggle, the youth team from Heilbronn. I would estimate their average age at about 14. They did, however, some very talented players that will be making big waves in Germany when they add a couple centimeters to their heigth. We ended up beating them only due to our experience and heigth advantage 12:2.

We then played the Maultaschen from Tübingen. They were a tough opponent, but we beat them 11:8. Then we were pit against Disc-o-Fever from Würzburg. This team had Sandy, a great player who helped us win in Kaiserslautern last year, and Robert, an old Hallunke who Carsten and I have played with before. It was a good game, and sadly ended up with a "shoking" moment for our beloved quota skirt Julia. No lasting injuries, but another victory for us 12:6.

So we were undefeated: 3 Wins and 0 Losses. So were the Wadlbeiser and our next opponent Freiburg Disconnection, my origional team in Germany. We knew them to be a great team. I think they even play in the 1st federal league in the summer season. That is why it is totally superising that we burst out to a 2:0 lead! After one good point from them, we added 2 more! It stood 4:1 for us. The Religation-Tournament in Leipzig seemed to be in our hands! After a couple calls that broke down our game flow, we never really recovered. Freiburg scored 4 unanswered points untill we scored one more. It stood 5:5. From this point on, they showed us that they were a really good team. We have to be satisified with the final result ofour 6:9 loss. I think we showed in this game, that our team from Dresden can hold foot with the better teams from the west! We ended Saturday and the first round with 3 Victories and 1 Defeat. To pave over our misery, we shared a number of Wernesgrüners (an east beer!) with Disconnection on the city train on our way to Munich for our evening festivities.

Julia, our exiled Deckel Dreh'er in Munich, invited us to a wonderful Gnochi diner in her appartment. There I had the odd experience of Gnochi expanding within my tummy! After a short nap and a necisarry digestion walk in downtown munich, which included a short visit to the Hofbräuhas, we headed back to the Sport Hall in Unterföhring.

With the Gnochi still present in our bellies, we played in slow motion on sunday morning against the talented Wadlbeiser. Excluding a lucky pass to TWP, we didn't really get much going for us. We losst 13:1 and our hopes of Leipzig vanished in smoke.

One sign of a solid frisbee team, is the ability to recover mentally after big diossapointments. That is exactly what we did. Against our next opponent, Isostars from Augsburg, we played strong and hard. Even I finally got into a rythem. At the end of our best game of the tournament, we won 11:8. This, along with our 4:1 stand against Freiburg, were definately the highlights of this tournament for us!

Well there wasn't much left for us to do. except to finish 3rd. The Heidies from Heidelberg thought the same, however. In another good game we didn't play as great as the game before, and blew it: a 7:10 loss.

We finishend 4th place from 11 teams with 4 wins and 3 losses. We showed that we can stand with the other mediocre teams of Germany. Hopefully this will inspire us to play well in the 4th federal league indoor champinships in March/April as well as the out door season in the summer. Although we won't be playing in Leipzig in the C-Religation, we will be there for the 1st outdoor tournament of the year: Kaltimate 2004!
