19./20. July, 2003
So we finally scraped up enough players to be able to play in Prague last week. Four of us came from Dresden, 0ne from Leipzig, one from Berlin, and 3 who rode their bikes from the usa (well I guess they only actually rode the bikes from Berlin, but they come from the US!). One of our beginers came on Saturday and we converted one of Franks friends into a Frisbee-Player. And that's how we became a really mixed up team!
Our mixed up team came to the tournement also very mixed up. Like I said, the 3 rode their bikes from Berlin. Frank and his friend Claus also rode their bikes from Dresden. Skandar sacrificed his day in Prague in order to provide his team with some yummy cookies from Berlin (and a place to sleep!). The rest of met with Skandar and Susi from Leipzig and took the train, Subway and Bus to the Rugby fields of Prague!
Of course we played frisbee too. Our first game was a to get warm in the hot sun against FUJ and we promptly lost 4:9. We followed it up with a win against the Terrible Monkeys (9:6) and a loss to the Golden Ants (5:9). Afterwards we beet 3SB 8:4. We had won 2 and lost 2, which gave us the same standing as our next opponent and last game of the first round, the Bay Bees from Bayraeuth. Because our Americans had to leave, and the Baybees were also ony there with 6 players (1 man and 5 woman!) we agreed to play 5 against 5. I think we had a too long break before this game, and somehow we fond ouselves down 1:7. We decided to push the mental RESTART button and played the second half odf the game much better. The time ran out on us and we lost this good game 6:11. Afterwards we enjoyed a cold shower and enjoyed the BBQ (with all the steaks we could eat and a chicken on top!). The following pirate ball was also very nice, but I didn't make it long before I had to hit the sack.
On Sunday we were ina cross over bracket with the Enzonies, Praha 7, and the Bay Bees for the places 5th through 8th out of 12. Our first game was against the Enzonies, and it was a game that almost made Drehst'n Deckel history. But almost means almost! We cought the Zonies sleeping and jumped out to grab the first point. Due too a series of turnovers we kept it even until 3:3. Then we got a second wind and pulled out to 7:3. For those of you who know the story of the Magdeburger Final, the rest should befamiliar. They brought it up to 7:6 with a minute to play and then tied it up right after at 7:7 after time ran out. We had to play one more point to detirmine the winner. We had the offense..... we had the wind at our backs...... we had our best players on the line! We also invented a new pass called the "Frankie", which promptly led to the Endzonies putting their 8th point in the zone! Final score: 7:8. A good game for us, and a scare for Rostock.
We found ourselvesin the game for 7th place against the Bay Bees. Our bike riders had to leave, so we agreed again to reduce the game to 6:6. It was a game plagued by wind and countless turnovers in both directions. I remember one particular point that seemed to take an hour. Anyway, we played hard, but could only manage a 3:4 loss. 8th Place for a mixed up Drehst'ner team!
Thanks again to all of our non-Drehst'ner helpers (Susi aus Leipzig, Skandar aus Berlin, und Bo, Toni, and Dave from the US). We couln't have done it with out you.
