Ultimate Tournement in Stuttgart: German Collegiate Championship (DHM)
28./29. June, 2003

After back to back years of placing second to last in the DHM in Darmstadt and Tübingen, the Scheibenkleister worked hard all year (even outdoor trainings in the freezing winter!) with the goal of improving our placement at the annual German Collegiate Championship this year in Stuttgart. Dresden's own college team worked long and hard this year to develop a 3-2-2 Offence and a Zone Defence. It was a long awaited tournement, a chance to test our advancement againce 28 other college teams from all over Germany!.

After a rude awakening in our tents from the automated sprinkler system on the fields, we moved our tents up the hill and found our selves together for a heardy breakfast and warmed up for round one. Our first game against Darmstadt, who was 3rd last year and the second best returning teambecause Rostock didn't come this year, was an expected loss. I think it was a confidence booster, however, for us to score on the first drive to go ahead 1:0. Our next game against Köln was much more exiting and I think one of our best overall game of the tournement. We came back after beeing behind to even it up at 6:6 with 5 minutes to go. Somehow we couldn't get any more points and our opponents really picked up their offence to score 3 more points. Afterwards we played München and got our first win, which was really important for our morale. We kept it going against Hannover and ended up 3rd in our 1st round pool of 5. A very satisfactory placement for the Scheibenkleister in the first round!

We beat the pick-up team playing in place of Chemnitz, who didn't show up, to start the second round. That brought our winning streeak up to 3 in a row, but we were really starting to get exhausted and in pain. That certainly made it hard playing against an Illmenau team that was coming out ouf a 3 hour break. After keeping it even till 3:3, their supierior fitness kicked in and they ran away with 6 unanswered points. A dissapointing end for the day, but nevertheless, a day with a 50% wins: The best overall day in the DHM history of the Scheibenkleister!
The Pleasant Part:
After a physically rough day, we were definately ready for some good old fashioned grilling! After deciding not to go swimming in the local mud-pit, we showered and fired up the grill. We played some Flubber-Guts to pass the time. Afterwards, it was time to say good-bye to Astrid, our only woman, who had to take the night train back to Dresden. I don't remember much more of that night, because I fell into an exhausted sleep next to the grill. When I woke up, the others had already gone to the party and I decided to just hit the sack under the open sky. The party was supposedly really nice with a live band from the Stuttgart Team.

Well there was bad news to start the day. After countless weeks in a row of bike tour, frisbee, and a marathon last week, our captain and coach Matthias couldn't play anymore. Together with the loss of Astrid, we were down to 2 reserve players! The party also seemed to have taken a toll on our players, and we started the day with a blow out loss against Düsseldorf. We faced the Chemnits Replacements a second time and took the automatic win to be pitted against Ulm in our final game for 21st place!. Ulm was making their first appearence in the DHM and turned out to be quite solid for a new team. Lead by a former Drehst'ner they took it from an evenly matched game at the begining to solid win at the end. The Kleistermeister of the Scheibenkleister finished 22nd out of 29 teams: Our best placement ever!
In other news:
For those of you who know her, Jenny played in her first DHM with Leipzig and ended up with the honors of the best East German College Team 2003 at 10th place. My other team, Halle, finished shortly behind at 12th place. Congratulations Leipzig and Halle!
